Surbiton High School

Many students of Surbiton High School wondered how they ever coped before iPad was introduced by Albion over 10 years ago. Since then, the tech-enthused school has implemented a number of Apple accessories and now champions modern education. All leading to becoming an Apple Distinguished School.

Inspire, encourage, empower.

Surbiton High School was established over 140 years ago, initially providing superior education for girls. However, fast-forward to modern day and they educate over 1700 pupils across 3 schools (a boys prep, a girls prep and a senior school) with 8 different sites. Surbiton aims to inspire its young people, encourage them to achieve greatness and empower them to be fully prepared for life outside of school in the 21st century. In comes Apple and Albion to help them do just that.

Why did they choose iPad?

Surbiton High School needed something convenient, simple, and reliable, but perhaps most importantly, they needed something that worked seamlessly across their multi-split site. Mobility is key for any technology they bring in, and that’s why iPad fits the bill so well. Despite the temptation to choose other products, the acknowledgment of iPad’s superior workflow capabilities made the decision easy to make.

“It allows teachers to move around the classroom, rather than being stationed at the front of the classroom. It is unparalleled compared to what they used to be able to do”
– James Flynn, Assistant Principal – Whole School, Innovation & Organisation, Surbiton High School

The iPad has created a focused learning environment, allowing students to consume information efficiently and in real time. Gone are the days when pupils had to carry brick-like textbooks around and spend countless time skimming through pages trying to locate the information they required.

“It makes it super efficient for us to get learning to them, and that’s the biggest gain”
– Paul Reeves, Assistant Principal, Teaching & Learning, Surbiton High School

Apple Pencil impact.

Surbiton High School has found that the uptake of Apple Pencil has been high, and continues to grow as more students discover the brilliance of this creative tool. As GCSEs and A-levels remain in their current format, writing is still an essential skill for young children. Apple Pencil brings it into the 21st century. The students can annotate their work in real-time, taking ownership of their learning and securing that information for longer.

“The Apple Pencil is really nice because it makes the iPad a bit like a pad of paper… I think it helps with memorisation when you write things down”
– Pupil, Surbiton High School

Equipped for tomorrow’s world.

Surbiton High School has recognised that children in the current educational setting must have access to technology because that’s the world they will move into. They don’t just use iPad for the sake of it, they are a school that continues to look at advancements in their technological offering to stay ahead of the curve. Perhaps this explains why they have been accredited not once, but twice as an Apple Distinguished School.

At the beginning of our 10-year journey with Surbiton, we recognised that they needed a lot of front-loaded support to implement new technology efficiently. We were more than happy to oblige. Albion provided Apple Development Training to support both their teachers and students. iPad has become somewhat invisible, blending in seamlessly with the schools’ teaching and curriculum. It goes beyond just supplying devices, it has become about teaching, learning, and prepping them for the future.
